United Nations Secretariat Associate Expert Program

Overview

The U.S. Department of State, Bureau of International Organization Affairs sponsors qualified U.S. citizens for participation in the United Nations Associate Expert (AE) program*. This program recruits American citizens under an agreement between the United Nations (UN) and United States government to work for the UN Secretariat on projects that promote international peace & security and economic & social development.

AEs are appointed to the UN for a period of one year, with a possible extension for a second year, subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funding.  This staffing program strengthens the capacity of the UN and provides U.S. citizens with the experience and skills necessary to become active members of the international community. After completing their assignments, many AEs successfully compete for positions in the UN.

Though sponsored and funded by the U.S. Department of State, selected AEs are considered international civil servants and are employees of the UN. Positions will be filled at the P2, Step 1 level with a full benefits package.

*Note: Associate Experts (AEs) are sometimes referred to as Junior Professional Officers (JPOs).

Eligibility

Education: Advanced university degree in a relevant field.
Professional Experience: A minimum of two years of relevant work experience.
Nationality: Only U.S. citizens may apply.

Associate Experts are entry-level professionals, so candidates with the appropriate level of experience typically are in their late-20s to early-30s. However, there is no specific age requirement to apply and all applicants possessing the relevant experience are considered.
